1st Prize

Helena Aldridge; Year 2; Dragon Pre-prep

Helena’s brilliantly imagined orchestra plays so loudly and joyfully, that I could hear it inside the folder of drawings I was looking through. And when I saw it I knew it was the first prize winner. The whole drawing is very carefully and thoughtfully composed, like a piece of music in itself. (I recommend you zoom in and enjoy every detail.) A highly original and humorous delight. Well done Helena.

2nd Prize

Subhaan Khan; Year 2; East Oxford Primary School

Subhaan’s characterful bird is very sensitively drawn and so well composed within the page that it immediately caught my attention. From the soft downy feathers of its body and wings, that are so gently drawn, to the bright red plumes of its assertive display, this bird is full of life and vivid energy. Well done Subhaan. 

3rd Prize

Daniel Tipler; Year 2; Cumnor CE Primary School

What an exciting snail! Eyes popping forward on bright green stalks, shell blazing like a Kathryn wheel, a bright red tongue, body bands and a pointy blue tail. If only the ones in my garden looked like this. Daniel’s intensely energised and original painting is a sheer joy to behold. Well done Daniel.

Years 3 to 4 (judged by Korky Paul)
A growing awareness and concern for the fragility and the relentless destruction of our planet Earth led to many very powerful and creative visual messages from the artists in Years 3 to 4.  The winning art works reflect this admirable apprehension from those so young - and comes as a warning to us all.

Harriet Thacker; Year 4; Carrdus School

Harriet's winning entry shows  good drawing and painting skills, as well as superb composition and design. The narrative in this picture is moving and poignant and an image for these times; such a powerful emotion stirred
​with  simplicity.

2nd Prize

*Oscar Balchin; Year 4; North Hinksey CE Primary School

Oscar's graphic, colourful and disturbing images capture the noise of social media, the internet and everyday urban living. He has a very sharp eye for composition and design, making a jumble of emoji images into a coherent and
​clever image.

3rd Prize

Anna Fry; Year 4; St Mary & St John Primary School

Anna has deftly painted these hot red and yellow pyramids of fire raging across bush, burning all before it. The lone kangaroo is perfectly positioned, facing right to left, a visual device highlighting the futility of any effort to escape.

Years 5 to 6 (judged by David Melling)

1st Prize

Jimmy Cecil; Year 6; Cothill House

More than once I felt I had found the winner but it wasn’t until I saw Jimmy’s extraordinary painting, that I knew, without doubt, this was the one. The confidence of the brush strokes, the command of technique, as well as the impressive colour palette. This painting is outstanding.

2nd Prize

Rosa Hamilton; Year 5; St Mary & St John Primary School

You are always on the look out for a memorable image, and this painting by Rosa certainly left an impression. Witty, thoughtful and cleverly executed it made me smile when I first saw it…and still does.

3rd Prize

Sophia Fairrie-Foxall; Year 6; Great Tew Primary School

Portraits are very challenging to do at the best of times but this image shows skilful draughtsmanship as well as a refreshing use of text. The resulting powerful composition shows an innovative and thoughtful response to the theme.

Matilda Bearchell; Year 9; Wheatley Park School

A serene and highly imaginative piece from Matilda illustrating the maturity of her sensitive brush work and sophisticated use of limited colour palette. 

2nd Prize

Etain Barry; Year 8; Bloxham School

Etain’s exquisite drypoint etching shows us that she understands how subtle variation of mark making is key to this type of linear portraiture. 

3rd Prize

Anna Pratley; Year 9; Cokethorpe School

Anna has the confidence to invent a surrealistic and powerful visual object that spoke strongly to everyone who saw it.
